We Need Your Help!
We actually have two projects we need help for, and they're both related, so I'll go over them one at a time. First, as most of you know, the new site is going to feature a full-fleged PokeDex. To make the process of building the dex entries either, our local code monkey MechanicalMonarch has created a brilliant program that practically does the job for us. One of the most remarkable features of the dex entry builder is its learnset creator; all you have to do is input the name and level of the move, and the program takes care of the rest. However, this requires.... Read More

Chapter 7: The Macabre Mess

Zarke sighed lightly as he arrived on the island that he was long overdue. The blazing sun in the sky was a pleasant sight, after the stormy weathers of the last few weeks.

The last few weeks were a mess to be honest. The tournament of Ishmadal. The awakening and the end of Solipsus. The temporary alliance with Eclipse. And the disastrous battle at Ishmadal. The last one was not much of a surprise. He was up against a skilled trainer, against opponents that were more than just a little well-trained. It was unlikely that he would even win in the first place. But at least he learned a little something from the ordeals, though he was not pleased to deviate from his original plan. And the fact that he was dragged around on wild goose chases.

As he looked around, he wondered if Mio would be around here. He had no message from her in the last few days, but he would not be surprised if she appeared before him without notice. After all, she had always managed to avoid him for years, and meeting another person was much easier than avoiding. But for now, he knew that the best way to progress was to deal with the challenges on this island while he searched this place for any traces of Evy. And he might as well pay a visit to Cissy while he was at it.

Zarke smiled lightly as he recalled the incidents of the last time he was here. The gym challenge was interesting to say the least, but he knew the times had changed now. The new gym would be similar to the other gyms around the world, but he would not be surprised if the theme of the gym remained the same. Cissy had always liked to use Water types, and it would not be unlikely that this would be the same. But he knew that he would not be ready to challenge just yet. After the loss at the tournament, he knew that he needed to train his current Pokémon more.

He slowly walked down the street, his sight aimed straight at the Pokémon Center. His first destination should be that building. If Mio was here in the first place, she would most likely be there. And if she was not, he could check in on the current situation here and then move on to his other businesses on the island. But, hopefully, it would not come to that...

---

But unknown to Zarke, his movements here on the island were being tracked...

"He was long overdue to be here." muttered a rough voice.

A soft voice came in reply. "Well, apparently he was distracted. The word came that someone dragged him elsewhere."

"Well, it does not matter now." The first voice spoke yet again. "He would leave this island in our custody. Dead or alive."

Suddenly a man ran up to you. "Hey, are you Zarke? Well I have some news for you. Charlemegne has been disqualified from the tournament, so that means you're back in! Also do you want to battle?"

Zarke sighed lightly as he noted the news. It would seem that trouble followed him wherever he went. To be honest, he wished that he was out of the tournament already. The whole incident was a mess, to begin with. And he was more than a little sure that Evy was not on the island. The whirlpools of the island should have kept any intruders out, drowning Pokémon no less. But he was sure that the Pokémon had survived the dive from the ship S. S. Starlight Somehow, he knew that.

As the new trainer challenged him to a battle, Zarke was certainly in not much of a mood to decline. He was already looking for a battle to train up before he searched this island carefully, and he knew that if he were to pay a visit to Cissy, it was more than likely that she would be asking for a battle. Not to mention that he would be willing to challenge the gym as well, since he had already started to gather the badges of this region. It would be easier to travel through this region with the respective badges in his grasp, since there would be more and more battles ahead. Battles that he might not win if he moved around on his lonesome.

Watching the new Pokémon that was released, he searched through his mind briefly as he noted the familiar appearance. He recalled that he had obtained this Pokémon, though the incident that led to it seemed so long ago. It was during the wild goose chase in the Abyss of Lost Dreams, where he arrived at the Tearoa Jungle, but too late to stop the revival of Valyth. Now that he thought about it, it was amusing that he had only aided the deity of valor just days ago.

But now that he knew what he was up against, he knew what he had to do. A single wave of his hand as he quickly released the one Pokémon that would have the best advantage in this battle. After all, the anteater Pokémon was a Fire and Ground type, which left it vulnerable to water based attacks. And he had only one Pokémon who would make use of that. The mystery Pokémon appeared, more than just a little ready to battle. The loss in the battle earlier had certainly fired up its competitive spirit, and it was more than willing to battle any opponents. Certainly, this little Pokémon was willing to take on this one.

As it sized up the opponent, it immediately fired off a powerful burst of water. The Pikablu had certainly realized what was the best move to use. This would make this battle a lot more easier. But who knows what tricks this opponent might have? He knew now that he must never take things at its face value. Opponents like to hide their secrets so as to better take advantage of it as a surprise move. And this trainer might certainly be one of them...

Crimsant, seeing the intimidating mouse Pokémon, used Pursuit to deal mediocre damage to it - but Pikablu's Water Gun was much more than mediocre.

The attack that the fire anteater used was something that he had not anticipated. The black flash as the Pokémon struck was unmistakeably one of the Dark moves. Zarke was surprised by the move, for two reasons. One, he did not expect that the Pokémon would use any Dark type moves at all. Second, he had believed that the Pokémon would strike with a Ground-based attack. But as it was, this was something new that he had learned, and which reminded him of old knowledge. The knowledge that many Pokémon are capable of learning Dark type moves naturally, with Pursuit and Bite at the forefront.

Looking at the Crimsant again, he knew that the Water Gun was a powerful move, but apparently, it was not powerful enough. The opponent was certainly strong, and he knew that if he could not take down this foe easily, there was not much chance of him doing so in the challenges ahead. It was a pity, but that had to be so. A tournament where he was up against the best, using a team that he was not that well-acquainted. It was certainly a recipe for disaster, but he knew that a recipe for disaster was certainly a recipe for learning.

But for now, there was a battle that he had to deal with first, and it was certainly one thing that he could not ignore just yet. However, his concern was meaningless as the water Pokémon made its own move again. Well, it was certainly intelligent to select the best move for the situation as the mystery Pokémon used the same attack again, firing off yet another blast of water at its foe. It would seem that this attack would be the last, but he was not ready to let down his guard. There were always tricks involved in battles, and the only question was whether they would be used. Something that he could not anticipate.

Zarke narrowed his eyes as he noted the new Pokémon of this trainer. He was right when he assumed that the Crimsant was not the only Pokémon on the team. Even thought Unystery had taken the first round, it was unlikely that he would be able to do the same now. But as it was, the new Pokémon seemed to be a pink dolphin, which meant that this was most likely a water type, with perhaps another secondary typing.

Frowning slightly to himself, he decided that he would not risk the Pikablu in this battle. After all, there was another choice for him to use, and the electric Pokémon had already taken slight injury from earlier. With two swift movements, a single red beam of light caught the water Pokémon as yet another white flash of light came into existence. As the Mystery Pokémon returned to rest, a different Pokémon took its place. One with ferns growing off its back. As the oddly-coloured Ivysaur took its place before the opponent, it roared slightly as it sized up the foe.

Zarke concentrated for a moment, trying to recall the best move for the situation, but that was ultimately meaningless. Florizare had started to move against its foe, as an orb of greenish power formed before its mouth. He noted that attack, one that he had taught the Pokémon back at Tarroco. That had seemed so long ago, but it was only just about a few weeks back. And as he thought of that, another concern crept into his mind. But he quickly shelved it away, knowing that it was useless to worry about it needlessly. There was nothing that he could really do for now. Except to wait. And hope.

Zarke frowned lightly as he noted the choice of moves and its consequences. Attract. That was really a move that he did not expect. But it was something that had taken his Pokémon by surprise. The sudden infatuation caused the grass Pokémon to hold off its attack, which certainly something that he did not hope for. This certainly had played havoc with his plans, but even now, he was not sure what his choice should be. This would certainly be one of the few moments when he was not sure what he would do.

Closing his eyes for a moment, he decided to try again. If the attack worked, it would be a nice progress but he would not lose sleep over it otherwise. Speaking in a soft but firm tone, he called for the lovestruck Pokémon to try again. But even so, he had decided to bring yet another Pokeball. It was not the best choice he had, but it would have to do. But looking at the eyes of Florizare, he could only wonder if this was the best choice he had. Even as the Ivysaur moved to his commands, there was still a slight delay to its moments. Getting the Pokémon to attack yet again might just prove to be a problem...

But Ivysaur didn't attack. He stumbled a bit, swooned, but failed to unleash a blow and simply stood there with a faraway, goofy smile plastered on his face.

Dolventine twisted, its long body shimmering in the light- a light that coalesced around Ivysaur and struck him for critical damage. But still the saurian plant stood there, lovestruck.

The fact that the second attack failed again meant that this plan of attack was a failure. Not that Zarke had not known that this would already happened. This was the reason why he silently brought out of one of his most trusted Pokémon.

The Gazalaxy appeared in a poise manner, certainly more than ready to take on any foe. But the fact remained that Pokémon was certainly crushed in the battle earlier. But that was to be expected. He already knew that he was in over his head when he had entered the tournament. But this time round, he was not in it, and that meant he had a slight chance to win this without too much casualties. No, he would win this battle against the strange dolphin Pokémon with the stargazing Pokémon.

As Lunastra glowed with bluish power, Zarke took the chance to recall the lovestruck Ivysaur. Florizare would be of little use if it had remained, and it was more than likely that it would interfere if he had allowed the Pokémon to stay. Perhaps it was best to allow the grass Pokémon to rest for now. Even so, the psychic Pokémon was more than ready to take on the water opponent as the stars on its body glowed with the same blue light. A psychic attack might be useful considering that the foe was most likely a Light type as well. That much he had gleaned when it struck with the strange burst of light. If this was right, this battle might just be done with, considering that the same Attract technique would not work now...

[ Three paragraphs just to say 'Gazalaxy used Confusion' does not require you to apologize for a 'short' post. >.< ]

Dolventine unleashed another brilliant glow from her body, striking not the lovestruck Ivysaur but instead the lithe form of Gazalaxy. Gazalaxy stumbled somewhat, momentarily blinded by the light, but shook it off quickly enough and channeled a burst of psychic power at Dolventine.

The strange dolphin Pokémon was fast, and struck with the strange burst of light again. Zarke watched the battle proceeded, wondering for a moment what the move was. It was without a doubt a Light type move, but other than that, there were not much clues at all. Nevertheless, the move was certainly quite powerful as it forced the Gazalaxy back a little with the blast.

As he watched the foe carefully, it was only now that he understood the strange looks of the Pokémon. The pink colour of the Pokémon. The strange love shapes on the body of the dolphin. The use of Attract as the first move. This was without a doubt a Pokémon that symbolized love, just as Luvdisc was. This was something new that he had learned, but this was not the time to wonder about such tiny knowledge as it was.

Lunastra was strong, but even so, it might not be strong enough to handle such attacks continuously. This meant that he needed to force an end to this battle as soon as possible. As the eyes of the psychic Pokémon glowed with blue power again, Zarke knew that the stargazing Pokémon was going to use yet another psychic attack. This was the best move at the moment, since the opponent was most likely a Light type. As the body of the Pokémon glowed with the same light, the stars on its body shone with power. All it needed was the right opportunity and perhaps this duel against this opponent would be done.

Lunastra was strong enough as it easily took down the little dolphin with yet another blast of psychic energy, but Zarke already knew that this was not the end of this battle. He had expected that if someone were to come all the way from Ishmadal to pass a message, and as well as challenging him to a battle, this trainer would have three Pokémon in preparation for the tournament or at least be acting in the format of the tournament itself.

And so, the next Pokémon arrived. But this time round, it was a small Pokémon. And from it looked, it seemed to be a grass rodent. Which meant that he knew what his choice was going to be. Though he did realise that he could still allow the Gazalaxy to continue if he had wished for it. With a swift movement, he brought out yet another orb just as a red beam of light brought back the psychic Pokémon. And the secondary orb launched itself into the air with a single flick of his wrist, and the first Pokémon he had received here materialised into existence.

The fire kangaroo jumped about for a moment, certainly more than just a little eager to be out of its confinement. Zarke smiled lightly at that, wondering if the over-energetic urge of the Pokémon would ever wear out. But at least, this was something to take comfort in. And certainly, Fyra was more than just a little willing to take things into her own hands as she started out with the most powerful move in her arsenal. Which was incidentally the best move for the situation. A gigantic burst of flames issued from her mouth, spreading out like a giant flower of fire. This was certainly a beautiful sight, one that he hoped that he had the chance to take a picture of in the future. But this would have to do for now. He had a battle to settle and he did not need any distractions now as he studied the scenario carefully. This could be a good learning opportunity...

The little rodent struck fast but the damage it dealt was not substantial. For a Quick Attack, this grassy foe seemed to not have the necessary attack power to deal devastating damage. Not unlike Fyra who had evolved into a much powerful form, and utilizing a painful burning attack. Lava Plume was definitely a useful move against many, but against a single foe, it would have to do for now until Zarke taught the young Pokémon Flamethrower or one of the more powerful Fire type moves.

Looking around, Zarke wondered what he had been doing on this side-trip to this region. From the start to now, it had been battles, battles and more battles, as well as countless wild goose chases. Somehow, it felt like he was being manipulated in some ways that he could not yet detect. As though there was someone behind the scenes moving events. He wondered if the nameless caller was the one responsible, though it might be giving the person too much credit. The stranger was the one who had sent him to many wild goose chases, but he had however learned a bit through them. Zarke knew that the Espeon was most likely still among the Orange Islands, and perhaps closer than he would think. After all, it would seem that he was purposely sent to faraway locations, but even so, it might just be a coincidence.

Turning his attention back at the battle at hand, Zarke nodded slightly to the fire Pokémon. Fyra was more than ready to continue, and with the signal given, it immediately bounced forward and prepared to unleash its attack. As its mouth glowed red with the power of flames behind it, it would seem that the little grass rodent was not sitting there to be hit. He narrowed his eyes at it, wondering just what would happen next. The Pyroby might be strong now, but this was with a type advantage. Not all battles were going to be so easy after all, and he had to learn to be ready for all situations. Just as his Pokémon should as well...

Zarke sighed lightly as the battle ended. It was a narrow win, and he knew that he would not be able to count on such luck again in the future battles. Being able to match types was one thing, but a victory would not be this easy in the future. This was definitely going to be a significant problem in the future. But for now, all he had to do was to push onwards, and hope that nothing happened for the worse. He smiled bitterly to himself, knowing that this would never be the case.

Rising his hand a little, he recalled the fiery Pokémon as he checked his surroundings yet again. Yet again, he was being cautious. Perhaps too cautious, but he already knew that one cannot be too cautious. After all, he seemed to have a stream of bad luck ever since that fateful little trip on that cruise that was weeks before.

Weeks.

It had already been weeks since he had last seen his faithful companion. Zarke thought quietly as he wondered what had happened to the Espeon. She was bound to be doing well. Or as well as any Pokémon left on her own would be. For one, Evy was clever enough to survive and powerful enough to handle any situation. After all, he had been with her so long now that he knew what she was fully capable of. He could only hope that she was not injured in any way, though this was only just out of pure concern. The gift of Wish was definitely more than capable of healing most injuries the Pokémon might sustain.

All he could do now was to push on and hope that he would come across the Pokémon as he searched. But deep down, Zarke knew that it was unlikely that he would find the Pokémon in any towns since an alert would be put out since Evy was an owned Espeon wandering alone. He just had to continue searching, and hope that Lady Luck would smile upon him.

He thought the same of Mio, but he knew that she was more than capable of looking after herself. After all, she had been on her own for the last few years, without any help from him. Then again, he knew that he was of not much help at the very moment. And the fact that she had not called back after the incident a while back was troubling at the very least. He could only hope that she did not run into something that she could not handle.

Zarke sighed yet again to himself as he noted his train of thoughts.

Hope.

He had been doing that a lot recently. He had felt helpless, and certainly way out of his depth. Like the few incidents recently. A fish out of water and straight into the fry pan and the flame. That was what it had been to him. And he was being played for a fool. Being played as a little pawn in someone's game. Being controlled. Being manipulated. As though he was a mouse being played around with a little kitten.

But he was no mouse. Zarke knew that he would have to be able to handle anything that came his way. And to do so, he needs to be cautious with his tactics and movements, and to trust in his instincts. And he needs to observe and watch out for any sign of trouble.

He slowly started walking, making his way towards the gym a distance away...

Unaware of the danger that was slowly creeping up on him.

But was it a true danger? Or was it an encounter that he could not evade?

A danse macabre was surely about to begin...

Zarke looked at the new trainer, pondering to himself the many questions that had run through his mind.

Challenges again and again and again. The endless quest in pursuit of excellence. In pursuit of the elusive mastery over all Pokémon. It would be amusing if not for the fact that this world favoured power, and that as a trainer, he had to be caught up in it. This was a responsibility as a Pokémon trainer, and he often wondered if the trouble was ever worth it. The fact that Evy was not here might have altered that perception.

Looking at the new challenger as well as his released Pokémon, Zarke knew that this was yet another battle that he had to push for his best. If he were to survive in this region, he needs to be able to handle any challenges coming his way, and that includes taking on battles that was at a disadvantage to him. It was the only way that he could improve, and the only way that he can gain more knowledge about the Pokémon that lived in this region. Learning was an experience that never stopped, and was one of the few things that interested him that deeply.

His eyes narrowed now, drawing deductions from all of his observations. For one thing, the Pokémon seemed to be a Rock type. Perhaps there was a secondary typing but for now he could not see if that was so. But at least this brought him to a decision, and a possible course of action. And he acted on it, tossing out a single orb that he had selected even as his mind moved.

What appeared was the grass Pokémon that had seen quite a few uses ever since he had obtained it. The Ivysaur was certainly more than ready to take on the strange little opponent that was before it as it immediately launched into its attack. A greenish orb glowed in front of its mouth as it prepared to launch into a fearsome attack. But this was just the start and he had no idea how this battle would work out. All he could do was to wait and see. Just wait and see.

Ivysaur unleashed a blast of green energy on Tottem, who only narrowly managed to survive the attack. Tottem responded by tearing up a chunk of earth and hurling it at Ivysaur, but the result was notably weak compared to Ivysaur's power.

Zarke smiled slightly at the proceedings of the battle. It would seem that his deductions of the opponent being of the Rock type was correct as the strange little Pokémon tossed a piece of rock as an offensive move. So, it would seem that this battle for now would be very simple. But the opponent had three Pokémon, which meant that this was a simple test, something that he was not at all happy with. This meant that this battle was not going to be easy, and that would be something that he had to be wary of.

Looking at the two Pokémon, he knew that his Pokémon was doing rather well in comparison. The Rock Throw was not all that powerful, but the Energy Ball had certainly taken out quite a chunk of health from the rock Pokémon. This only meant one thing. He need to take advantage of this situation as much as he could.

Zarke quickly nodded at the grass Pokémon, and Florizare launched its attack immediately. A repeat performance of before.

An orb of greenish energy soon formed before its mouth, the attacked aimed straight at its foe. For a rock-type foe, it was bound to be slow, which meant that if this attack were to succeed, he could certainly take out the first opponent with little difficulty. A slight concentration would be needed and this would be the end of this battle against this rocky foe.

Zarke looked on carefully as the first Pokémon fell. The rock Pokémon was not a difficult opponent, but it was by no means a pushover. He had only gotten due to the fact that his Bulbasaur had evolved into an Ivysaur, and the fact that he had taken the time to teach Florizare Energy Ball, a powerful grass type move for its level.

However, the next Pokémon that was sent out was one that he was familiar with. The electric rodent Raichu. While the Ivysaur could certainly do well against it, he knew that the best choice was to strike hard and fast, and he knew that he had a Pokémon who could do just that. Or at least that was the idea he had. But time would tell if this was a wise choice.

With two swift movements, he quickly brought out his choice of a Pokémon just as the grass Pokémon was returned back to its resting place. Taking on this opponent would require precise timing and pinpoint strikes, and this was something that he was not sure he was capable of. But at least the Pokémon was more than ready for it as the warrior Pokémon struck ready, crouched in a combat stance.

Maijin quickly moved for a strike as it acted immediately on its instincts. And thankfully for Zarke, the instincts of the Pokémon had guided it well as it moved fast, with a speed that was not normally seen. Extremespeed to lead into a strike was the best choice for now, and the power of the Pokémon backed with the band around its right fist was not one to be taken lightly. All that was to happen was to determine the results of this duel. But even so, he knew that he had to be ready. This battle was just about to heat up...

Zarke frowned lightly as he watched the battle proceeded. The Raichu had certainly packed more than just a little electricity and that could be easily seen for the little bolt just now. But in any case, Maijin had packed a bigger punch literally, but it was still impossible to determine the winner at this point. Against an opponent like the electric rodent, something disastrous could happen at any moment. And certainly at a wrong time.

He continued to frown as he signalled to the Pokémon to strike again. This time round, the Karama wasted no time as it was immediately locked into a single move. The speed and the strength of the warrior Pokémon can be easily seen as it dashed forward, its body propelled by the unnatural speed, moving straight into a direct strike.

Zarke looked on carefully, his hands absently handling a single orb. Something told him that this would be bound to go wrong at any point, and he was not in a mood to disagree. The battle had been proceeding rather peacefully thus far. This only meant one thing: It was bound to go worse. And if he was right, the point of turning would be soon enough...

Zarke watched carefully as the battle proceeded. Although the Karama was able to deliver a clean and lethal blow to the Raichu, it would seem that the electric rodent had left quite the aftermath. The sparkles of electricity dancing across the body of the Pokémon told him the whole story. Apparently, the ability Static of the electric Pokémon had activated upon the impact of Extremespeed, and this had caused Maijin to be paralyzed slightly. But this paralysis had certainly brought out quite the rage in the Pokémon as it urged to battle again.

But this time round, he was not going to allow the Pokémon to remind. Just as his foe recalled the fallen rodent, Zarke did the same with the warrior Pokémon. Fighting this battle at a strict disadvantage was definitely not something that he had wanted to go with.

However, it seems that fate had other plans for him. Just as the foe sent out the third Pokémon, another Pokémon of his own took to the stage without being called for. The stargazing Pokémon appeared, poised and certainly more than ready for a battle. This was interesting as he did not know that the psychic Pokémon was looking for a battle. He sighed lightly at this, knowing that the choice had been made as he stared at the new battle situation.

Just as he was about to call out a command, Lunastra had immediately made its own move. Its eyes glowed in the same blue power, as though it was using a psychic move. Except the stars on its body did not do so, nor did the scythe horn on its head. Zarke watched carefully, wondering what was going to happen. This was not a move he had seen the Pokémon used before, nor did he know of any moves that the Gazalaxy might have known. But the sudden appearance of rocks surrounding the stargazing Pokémon in a circle told him something. A new Rock type move. This was bound to be interesting now...

Gazalaxy was alert enough to dodge the quick Heat Wave that Vollov sent at it, and responed by sucessfully pinning the bird with a well-placed group of floating rocks to the wings.

Zarke frowned as he noticed the attack unleashed by the bird with red feathers that was his new foe. It had seemed to be a fiery phoenix, and the attack proved that it was. The powerful gusts of flames might be strong, but the psychic Pokémon had managed to call forth the pieces of rock to dispel the attack, and then utilized it to strike the bird painfully. This was certainly a welcome progression.

Looking at the opponent carefully again, he could only wonder how powerful the foe was. The flames from before were by no means weak, and the wings certainly showed that it held more than just a little power. But the most important question as to its strength was still an unknown. The only way to find out was to get attacked, but that was definitely a choice that he did not wish to take.

Nodding at the Gazalaxy, Zarke allowed the Pokémon to continue. Not as though this action was necessary in any case since Lunastra was more than capable of handling itself in a battle on its own. The previous attack had certainly proved that. The only problem was that he did not know if that attack would work again. The previous rock attack might just be a lucky strike, and it might not prove true again.

As he thought of this, the psychic Pokémon had begun making its moves. Its eyes glowed in the same eerie light again, just as pieces of rock materialized around it in a circle. This rock type move was certainly useful, but using it to attack down this foe might be easier said than done. All it needed was just a bout of misfortune and this battle might just be turned around in an instant...

Zarke sighed lightly as the battle finished without too much of a hassle. It was indeed a lucky break that he got through this without having to rely on more than three Pokémon. This was a test of strength, and it would seem that he had managed to get through without too much of a mess involved. This would only mean that the trials ahead of him would only get tougher and tougher as time went by, and it was certainly not something that he was looking forward to.

As he recalled the psychic Pokémon, he slowly took his bearings. At this time in the afternoon, there were certainly some trainers wandering about, getting in a little training for their Pokémon while they were at it. It was not strange at all to see, for he was the same. Getting in some practice before the real battle up here. Cissy was unlikely to give up a chance to battle him again, not after he beat her so easily a few years or so back. It would certainly be worth it to see if their skills had differed after so many years. Being part of the league tends to change someone after all.

Thinking back, he wondered when Mio will turn up again. Zarke knew that she was intending to meet him here but thus far, there had been no news on her part, while she had not rung him up on the phone either. He knew that she was more than capable of taking care of herself, since after all, throughout all these years, she had been doing so on her own. Even so, he could not stop worrying. The years of being a big brother had not certainly worn off even now. But he knew that she would look for him soon enough once she had some news. Or at least once she finished with whatever she was.

Sighing yet again, he slowly headed towards the huge gym in the distance, though the lights of the day were slowly beginning to die away. Dusk was soon approaching, and it seemed that it was impossible to challenge the gym today. But at least, Zarke should pay Cissy a visit. An encounter with an old acquaintance was not something to pass up easily. It will be interesting to find out what had changed over the years, especially since it was a proper gym now.

---

But it would seem that this trip was just about to cut short.

Just as Zarke had headed down a few yards, a shadow crossed in front of him. A giant shadow.

No, it was not a shadow, but a person dressed in a black cloak.

The fading light of the sun had concealed his approach, and Zarke narrowed his eyes at this. He could remember the incident at Valencia. He thought that they would not be so fast to track him down, but it would seem that he was wrong. He was definitely being targeted for some reason that he knew not. This was going to be a problem. The opponent was bound to have strong Pokémon.

As he took a step backwards, another shadow at the edge of his vision caught his attention. This time round, it was a person tall and thin like a bamboo stick. A huge man and a thin man who were both tall. Taller than him in any case. Zarke knew that this was certainly a bad situation that he had found himself in, and his hands slowly crept towards the orbs at the side of his belt. There was definitely going to be a battle coming up, and he was not sure if he could win it at any case.

But the huge man spoke, with a rough voice that rumbled like the voice of the mountains.

"Zarke. Your presence is required by the boss." The monotone voice intoned. "Do not resist or we would be forced to take action."

The rake-like man spoke in a quiet snigger in return. "Or you can resist, and we will bring you back in pieces if we have to."

Zarke stared at the two, slowly moving backwards away from them. He knew that he could not outrun them in his current condition, with his injuries from a while back not fully healed. And the two dressed in those black cloaks were certainly more than just a little athletic. Catching him would be an easy task for them, and it was unlikely that they would be gentle with it. It was more than possible that he would be simply killed instead. Which meant that he had only one choice.

However, it seemed that the two had already realised that. For they each brought out a single Pokeball.

"If you are going to resist..."

"... then do not blame us for using force."

Zarke smiled bitterly at this. If it was a battle, there was a chance that he could win. But a two-on-two battle was definitely not going to be easy. Not against such opponents...

Zarke narrowed his eyes as he noted the two new Pokémon that was called out to stop him. These two were definitely unfamiliar to him and that meant that he was unsure of their strengths which was definitely bad news to him.

Looking at them carefully, he noted that one seemed to be a moth or a butterfly of some form, which suggested that it was a Bug Pokémon, with perhaps a secondary typing as well. The other looked like a flower of some type, which suggested that it was primarily a Grass Pokémon. Looking at these two Pokémon meant that he had known which two would be the best to send as he brought out two Pokeballs with a swift movement.

Tossing the orbs back into the air, two Pokémon appeared, one landbound and the other airborne, similar to how the two Pokémon opposing them were like. The landbound Pokémon was a kangaroo, or more accurately a red kangaroo. Fyra was among Zarke's most powerful Pokémon and its flames were definitely not one to underestimate. However, the other Pokémon was a Swablu, the cotton bird Pokémon that he had recently picked up. This Pokémon was not that strong for now, but given the chance, it was likely to be quite the powerhouse.

For now, he had a battle to settle. In double battles, there was only one thing to look out for. Double-teaming. Both on his side and on the opponents' side. Which meant that he had to focus on one and take that opponent out as fast as possible. Which meant taking out the weaker Pokémon as fast as possible. He silently motioned for the two Pokémon to focus their attention on the flying foe. Bug Pokémon tend to be fragile but at lower levels, they packed quite the punch. This meant that it was a logical target to eliminate first.

The faster Kangaroo moved fast, bouncing forwards before shooting forth bursts of fire. Ember may be a weaker attack than Lava Plume, but he was not looking for friendly damage at this point. Taking out his own side would definitely make this battle a lot more difficult to handle. The little bird however called forrth a single orb of wind. Zarke was slightly surprised by this since he did not know that Ventas was capable of that attack. Air Slash was more than just a mid-level attack and this would certainly be useful in taking down these foes.

But he too knew that these opponents were not going to sit around and wait for the attacks to come. All he could do now was to observe, and wait for the perfect opportunity to strike fast and hard.

I... hate... double battles.

Lunafly and Drylac struck first. Lunafly dove forward and unleashed a burst of psychic power at Swablu, dealing critical damage and sending the cotton bird reeling. Drylac followed from below immediately with a burst of light in a Shimmer attack, dealing sufficient damage to finish off Swablu before the bird could attack.

Pyroby unleashed small streams of fire on Lunafly, who took the attack quite well for its weakness to fire. It also failed to catch light, leaving the faerie and the moth in good condition, while Pyroby remained healthy but Swablu was quite unconscious.

Zarke winced slightly as the two opponents decided to gang up on the weaker bird. And the reason was certainly something that he did not wish to see. The opponents were certainly powerful, and two attacks managed to drop the bird instantly. He might have just gotten in over his head now.

But despite that, he picked up something rather useful. The Bug Pokémon had used a Psychic attack just now, which meant that it was most likely a Bug and Psychic Pokémon, which meant that there was a way to take advantage of that. The other foe had used a Light attack, which meant that it was likely to be a Grass and Light Pokémon. This was certainly something that was going to prove useful. But now, he knew that he had to aim directly for the knock-out blow.

He signalled Fyra to use her most powerful attack and the fire Pokémon did so immediately. A powerful burst of flames issued from its mouth and scattered all over the entire battleground. Lava Plume was a dangerous attack to use here, but he knew that he needed to get rid of one of the opponents as fast as he could, and if he had to sacrifice his Pokémon to do it, he was not going to stop now. Survival was the key now.

Even as the Pyroby struck, Zarke quickly recalled the fallen bird and sent out yet another Pokémon. But this time, he led that Pokémon into aiming a direct strike at the weakened Bug Pokémon. The stargazing Pokémon burst out of its Pokeball at a run, a dark energy surrounding it as it rushed at the airborne opponent. Pursuit was a powerful attack especially used againt Psychic Pokémon, and he knew that the foe's Psychic attack would prove to be useless against Lunastra.

This battle required quick thinking and calculation, and the execution of minute plans. He thought quickly, taking into account the various information he had received. The fact that he was outleveled was something to take note, but he also knew that if he planned properly, he could still manage to steal a victory from under the two black cloaked opponents.

However, it was certain that events were not going to be that easy. This battle was not over by far...

Zarke glanced on carefully, noting the progress of his plan thus far. It would seem that the events had proceeded as he had wanted to, which was pleasing to him. He had calculated the possible situations that might crop up, but it seems that fate had smiled on him for now as he took down the Bug Pokémon. It was a pleasant progress as that opponent had been dishing out huge amounts of damage in just two turns. This would ease up on the pressure on his side.

His eyes momentarily went over the two black cloaked trainers and he could see that one of them was livid with anger. The fact that he had managed to take down one of their Pokémon was a sign that this was not going according to their plans. Which was something to look forward since he had no interest in being taken into custody. Especially by someone who seems to want him dead or alive. He knew that this battle was just going to be the first of a long series in the future ahead. The organization or group that these two belonged to would likely keep coming after him. This only meant that he had to keep moving, and to be on his guard from now on. Which was just what he had wanted to do in any case.

Looking at the two wounded Pokémon, his eyes immediately told him that Lunastra was in a much worse condition than Fyra. The glowing green leaves that had shot down from the grass Pokémon as well as the burst of flames from the Pyroby had been much more damaging than he had thought. But at least, the Pokémon survived and this was what he had wanted. For now, he knew that the Pokémon would not be able to last another blow against this foe. The Grass Pokémon was certainly strong and he needed a Pokémon with an advantageous position to fight against it. Which meant only one choice.

Bringing up a single Pokeball, he brought back the Gazalaxy. The Pokémon had certainly done the job well in taking down one of the foes but now he needed another to ensure that foe remaining would now fall. What he brought out was one Pokémon that would have a decent chance in standing against the remaining foe, but the problem of defeating it was still unknown. The strangely-coloured Ivysaur appeared before him, certainly more than ready to stand against the foe before.

But before Florizare had even made a move, Fyra had decided to bounce straight into action. The Wallaby Pokémon spat forth flames, the attack being a pinpoint fire attack instead of the area attack before. This was something that he needed to watch out for since one hit with the flames and his grass Pokémon might just bite the dust. Zarke was about to call out for the other Pokémon to do something, when it made a move of its own. From the ferns on its back, a shining blue powder sprayed out, the attack aimed straight at the Grass and Light Pokémon that was their foe...

Drylac glowed and a circle of light surrounded it, then it's health restored somewhat from the healing circle, then it was blasted with fire and put to sleep.

Zarke frowned lightly as he watched the battle proceeded. While it was a delightful scene to have the opponent fall asleep, he was concerned with what the grass Pokémon had used. A circle of light had surrounding the Pokémon previously, but nothing seems to have been unleashed. Either it was a passive move or it was something that was waiting to be activated. Both of these prospects troubled him as he could not determine just what might happen.

But for now, there was only one thing left to do. His eyes gazed over the two trainers, their expressions hidden in the hood of their black cloaks. But he knew that the two were nervous. For one thing, they were most likely to be anticipating little or no resistance. For another, they were unlikely to be able to defeat a Pokémon single-handedly by themselves. Of course, this would only be true if he was right in determining their reactions but at this point, he was more than just a little unsure. All he could do was to observe what little they revealed, and speculate about the rest.

For now, he must make sure that he was able to eliminate this last Pokémon before it woke up from its sleep. The Sleep Powder might have be successful, but consecutive attacks on the Pokémon might cause it to wake up prematurely. Zarke nodded slightly at the two Pokémon, and they both struck with their attacks.

Fyra bounded forward slightly, before spitting out little bursts of flames at the motionless opponent. Ember was the only useful move for now, especially since there was the fact of Florizare to consider at this point. The grass Pokémon, on the other hand, stood its ground as a greenish orb formed before its mouth. Energy Ball was the most powerful move in the Pokémon's arsenal, and certainly it would do rather well for now.

Even so, Zarke watched the battle as well as the two trainers behind them very carefully. He knew now that even if he had the upper hand, he could not afford to lose out due to some underhand tactics that were more than likely to be executed. They were after him for a reason, and it would be a surprise if there were no more tricks lying in wait. And so he observed them with care. He could not afford to be taken by surprise now...

Drylac continued to sleep, and the dual energies of fire and grass smashed into it and it went from sleeping to being knocked out.

Zarke breathed a soft sigh of relief as the grass type opponent fell in its sleep. But even so, he knew that this was not over just yet.

The two who were before him silently recalled their Pokémon, but they stood there watching him. As though they were contemplating something. However, it seems that nothing was going to happen. The two slowly stepped away, but not before uttering a single warning.

"Good. You have done well..."

"... But if you know what is good for you, run."

"Run as far as you can, though you would not be able to escape..."

"... Just hope that you can outlast this..."

And with that, they left the scene without any signs of their passing.

---

Zarke breathed out a sigh of relief as the two disappeared. It would seem that he had somehow managed to survive a crisis, but even now he was not sure if it was just that. He had a feeling that he was being tested for some reason unknown to him. As though he was being evaluated. That somehow was a disturbing thought.

He thought back for a moment, and the only logical conclusion was that the stranger who had challenged him to the game was doing this to spite him. As though he was just a single pawn in this game, and he was being played for a fool. But even so, in this game, there was only one thing that he could do. To play along as far as he could and wait for an opportunity.

After a brief check through his belongings, he continued on, walking towards that huge building in the far distance. The building of the Mikan Gym. That would be where his next stop was, and a place of yet another challenge. That would be interesting in the least.

---

However, unknown to him, eyes were upon Zarke. Watching. Observing.

"So, it had begun." A low voice rumbled. "Good job, you two. It would seem that he would be worthy of this little game. Wonder how far he would go before the clash would begin. There is no fun in fighting a little cat when you can fight a tiger. Let's hope that he does not disappoint..."

[OOC: Let the hunt for the random Pikachus begin! Just be catching them for tradebait though.]

ooc: Not sure on how this works in cities, because there aren't any Pokémon in cities, so not sure if you're guaranteed one or not.

That being said, I RNG'd a got no pika, so here's a one Pokémon trainer.
