New Unova Think Tank
Written By: Angel Knight Phil | Category: Community Spotlight

Ready for a new region?  I bet you just got your hopes up for something like Amaya, didn't you?  I'm sorry, but that's not the case.  Instead, why not help us put Unova together, with a little OI twist, of course.  I will be regularly scheduling meetings in the chatbox to encourage more usage and to let members help take some of the load off of us staff members.  Check the calendar for details!

Want to see how we've started so far?  Check it out here!

Interview with a Moderator: No. 6 and Disaster Cats
Written By: Leon Vane | Category: Community Spotlight

Due to technical issues (Porygon caught a virus), this interview had to be conducted via Quartzell-mail.

Chaos Shadow:*opens mailbox*
*squints*
What are-- what are you doing in there? How did you even fit? Get out. No I don't want your stupid survey, I need-- would you please--
...will you vacate my mailbox if I answer your questions? Fine. Fine.

Leon Vane: Where did the name "Chaos Shadow" come from? It almost sounds like a name some angsty 14-year-old would come up with after a fight with their parents (sorry if this steals your thunder).

CS: I was eleven, actually.

And no angsty adolescence or anything of the like. My handle is a Sonic the Hedgehog reference. This was back when Sonic Adventure 2 was new off the shelves and the Dreamcast was a thing that still existed. It's just a reference to the (then newly introduced) Shadow, plus chaos emeralds/control/energy. Chaos Shadow.

Needless to say I didn't think I'd still be hanging on to it twelve years later, but that's how it worked out.

Leon: You've done a lot of art for OI, and in your opinion, is it easier to draw something using Novi's sprites as references, or do you more often feel like it hinders your creativity because you're confined to resembling something already made?

CS: The very original reason I began working on the 'dex was to give myself an excuse to draw things I wouldn't otherwise draw and just broaden my horizons a bit; having the sprites to work off of made it easier to do so.

I wouldn't say it's been much of a hurdle for creativity. I do plenty of art on my own and I assure you creativity is not a factor I can do whatever I like with that. Having something more structured with the OI 'dex doesn't bother me, and sometimes it's a fun challenge finding something unique to do with Pokémon I might otherwise gloss over.

Leon: Speaking of OI, what brought you here in the first place? Along with that, what has been the driving force in your staying around?

CS: A woefully boring response; somebody (and I never really bothered to see who) had an OI banner in their signature on Serebii. I just followed the breadcrumbs and thought "Hey, this looks kinda neat", and, well, I had a lot of free time on my hand back then so I didn't see any harm in trying it out.

Then this happened:

Leon: You've easily got the highest-rated adventure by RePG standards, and your LP blog is somewhat like a cult hit. Combine that with your artistic talents, and a case can definitely be made for "Best member" (even against Novi). Have you ever felt like that, or is it just an honor to be in the conversation?

CS: Yeah that. It's hard to lose interest in a place when your name causes the masses to prostrate themselves before you. The monthly offerings are a nice touch, too. (To whoever sacrificed that goat: You're my favorite. I know how hard it is to get the hide off of those things.)

...I mean...

Honestly, I'm flattered. It's pretty awesome to be appreciated, and I appreciate it right back. I may be blushing.

Leon: SR has Wapahchu, AKP has Moltres, Novi has Dragonair, and I have LATIAAAAAAAAAAAAAAS. Then there's you and Absol; any particular reason for loving it or is it a culmination of many awesome little things?

CS: ...clearly I need to adopt a legendary.

Right, Absol. Ain't much to it; I just really like the design. I find it dreadfully hard to dismiss such an elegant creature. I mean it's basically a barghest mixed with a cat and then you stapled a freaking scythe to its head and it manages to look good all the while.

(Note: Do not staple an actual scythe to the head of an actual cat. Or a barghest. Although you probably already have some problems if you've got a barghest hanging around so you might as well.)

Leon: Is there any interest/hobby you have that you think people wouldn't expect from you? Something out there like being a closet UFC fan that stays up to date on all of the fights and rivalries or a secret NASCAR fan that attends two or three races a year?

CS: I don't believe so. I'm a nerd through and through, so the whole concept of things like competitive racing or sports or bagpipe playing is kind of lost to me. What I do on OI is basically my list of hobbies; I draw, I write, I over-analyze things for no good reason, I have a secret basement where I've been conducting unethical experiments on orphans for the last few years... nothing unusual.

Leon: This one's a two-part question. First, what has been your favorite Pokémon to draw? Second, what OI-mon are you most interested in giving your style to but just haven't gotten around to, yet?

CS: Oh, that's tough. The one that I specifically remember having the most fun to draw was back on Centilisk, which was the first time I (willfully) decided to play with the shading and posturing of the Pokémon. The Rocketdex mons that I did were also a lot of fun, particularly Macabor (actually, drawing it was what eventually made me decide to try using one in my party).

It's hard to say what Pokémon I really anticipate drawing. I've found that there's no real way to tell if something is going to be particularly fun or not until I've settled in to actually begin doing the drawing. Some Pokémon I expect might 'come naturally' I wind up having a strangely difficult time with, while others that I wouldn't think I'd enjoy are just the opposite. Totower, for instance, I was putting off because I didn't want to draw a bunch of stacked rocks, but once I got to it everything just kind of fell into place.

Or out of place, in this case. Hah hah you see what I did there I'm so clever.

Leon: You're the only person with chat powers that hasn't kicked me yet, and that's kind of annoying because I can't achieve 100% completion due to your avoidance of the chat. Is there a specific reason for that?

CS: I would love to be able to regale you with a thrilling tale of drama, romance, deception and betrayal which ultimately left me unable to ever look at a chatbox again without thinking of Diego Magnifico, the pirate who stole my wallet and tried to steal my heart. (Spoilers: I stole his guitar. He didn't appreciate the irony.)

Truth is I just don't like chatrooms that much. Part of it is that there isn't as much room to think before talking (and usually having really significant character limitations, which I don't much get along with), and that keeping up with conversation requires at least semi-active monitoring, which interrupts whatever work I'm doing.

also I'm a misanthrope

Leon: I fell off of staying updated with your LP due to university reasons, so if this was addressed in a post, I apologize for the redundancy. What's next for you? Another LP or maybe a break?

CS: 1. Fix that.
2. I hadn't planned that far ahead. I've still got a lot of stuff yet to address in NIER, so another project wouldn't even be in the works until probably next year (assuming civilization survives the apocalypse, anyhow). In any case I kind of went all-in with NIER; it has a very special place in my heart (the part that Diego tried to steal, in fact. I think it's around my left ventricle?) so it's a bit of a hard act to follow, trying to find something else to pour that much love into.

...although I'd kind of like to wrangle a friend and maybe look at something that I don't have any love for...

Leon: This session feels kind of short, but I've asked everything I wanted to cover, so like the rest of my interviews, I'll defer the final word to you. You can use this answer for something grand like getting volunteers for a seekrut project or something unexpected like a rant about the unfair state of oppression that Leef suffer from due to a horrible typing and even worse stats.

CS: Get out of my mailbox. And be quiet about it. Magnifico still wants his guitar back. If you see a man with a thick Spanish accent and a marvelous though ill-fitting wardrobe, we never met.

World Series of Pummelo
Written By: Leon Vane | Category: Competitive Corner

Five months ago, an idea was formed. It was ambitious and ended up requiring eighteen different people (one ref, sixteen initial entrants, one reserve entrant) involved in order to be a success. A tournament with teams based on location and blood, split in half by geography. The World Series of Pummelo featured eight teams representing the United States and another eight teams representing parts of the world.

The US battles were fierce and long, and eventually Pixels & Pirates came out on top. His Miltank faced mythical dragons from Georgian Native Americans' legends, gargantuan fossils from Michigan's history (twice), and California's glitz and glamor. Through skill (and some luck), he was able to outlast them all. One of the U.S.A.'s most iconic locations, the city so nice they named it twice, NYC is being represented along with the rest of the state against the best in the world('s bracket) for first place.

Despite the length of the U.S. battles, the World Bracket actually took longer to complete. From Brazil's rain forests to Russia's frozen tundra, they came, all eager to prove their worth. Chimera emerged as the greatest; Isreal's religion and storied bloodline complementing its impressive technological base. He had to face a rain team three times, displaying the evolved metagame of Gen V, though the rain benefited him just as much. After the first of those rain matches, he took on Ireland's team, whose luck had run out against his impressive Starmie.

The time has come to finish this, and we're going out in style. A best-of-three series shall decide the winner, a truer "World Champion" than any tournament in Black/White 2 could provide. Chimera currently leads the series, but P&P isn't completely out of it. A stunning comeback makes this series one to watch, even though it's [halfway / a third of the way] over!

We Will Art You
Written By: Haas, + Plasmeon, + Roxy | Art By: Chaos Shadow

Hello OI-ers, you may be asking yourselves: "Why the sudden change of lovely art hostess(es)?" Well, while Meg is dealing with life we three art critiques have stepped up to make sure you wonderful people still have some fine artwork highlighted in your Tangelo Times. No thanks is necessary; we are all glad to help.

With that being said, this TT we feature three pieces of art by the lovely Chaos Shadow!

This week she delivers to us the Tottem line (one of my favorite lines on OI, for your information.) and as usual she doesn't disappoint.

Tottem by Haas: Posted Image

I don’t know how Chaos Shadow does it, but she manages to make a rock look epic. I mean seriously. Look at this little guy. The look in its eyes tells you that he doesn’t want to mess with you and by the way he is cracked up, you can tell that he can beat you up pretty badly. CS really managed to make Tottem look pretty epic, even though they are just a bunch of rocks stacked on top of each other. I know I couldn’t pull that off. I would also like to point out the eyes. To me, they look like they have some Psychic potential, but not exactly. That look pretty much compliments Tottem’s typing and description. It definitely looks like it could see into the past and future. This is one guarding of the forest I would not mess with.

Putting words to describing the wonder that is this piece of work is. Chaos Shadow has brought life to what otherwise would have been a very static piece. Hard to give life to a totem pole after all. CS has managed it by breaking up the parts in the process of reforming after a Topple attack, showing that this Pokémon DOES have some spunk after all! Also, those glowing red eyes scare me. Even though none of them are actually looking at the viewer, they all stare straight into your soul. Very well done CS.

And finally back to me with Totower.

Posted Image

I absolutely love the way Totower turned out. I'm not even going to lie, at first I was expecting to see a large looking totem pole. Not even close. We see the individual pieces of Totower's body looking extremely adorable. Which actually changed what I envisioned "Topple" to look like. (Thanks for changing my headcanon, CS.)

The shading on these guys makes me feel like they're not rocks at all, just...creatures who happen to stack together and become a very large tower of rock. and awesome. I don't know if it's just because Totower is my favorite OImon, but I feel like this is one of my favorite works from CS. I just kind of like the originality with this one.

Hail and Farewell
Written By: Angel Knight Phil | Category: Hails and Farewells

Didn't we just do this?  Unfortunately, it has to be done again.  KnightEdge has decided step down as a member of the moderating team.  He gave us a good run, but unfortunately that pesky thing called life has come knocking.  We wish KnightEdge well, and thank you.

In his place, we are calling up Foxy Boxes from developmental.  Welcome aboard!

That does it for this issue of the Tangelo Times!  And for reasons not quite explained, I have an unhealthy obsession with torturing the Morningstars.
